Position Summary:
The School of Medicine, Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program (MEDPREP) at Southern Illinios University, School of Medicine Carbondale, seeks applicants for an Administrative/Professional Counselor. This is a full time, 100% FTE position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2021. The continuation of appointment is dependent on periodic reviews of performance.
The Counselor will specifically focus on supporting underserved and historically marginalized students, including first generation college students, Black/African, Indigenous/First Nations, Latinx, Multiracial and other students of color, and/or students who identify as LGBTQIA+. It is important that the incumbent recognizes the strengths of these students, as well as, the effects that discrimination, prejudice and systemic oppression have on marginalized individuals and how these negative biases may lead to psychological trauma and stress. Salary commensurate with experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide mental health assessment requiring strong generalist clinical skills to assess and intervene with a wide range of presenting student concerns within a time-limited treatment model. Counselor conducts initial assessments, provides individual counseling, crisis interventions, risk assessment, consultation and referrals. Service provisions include individual, small group and crisis counseling related to stress, developmental issues, academics, interpersonal concerns, trauma and other mental health concerns.
Provide counseling services for MEDPREP students including academic advisement and career/professional development.
Provides training to MEDPREP faculty and staff to ensure issues of diversity, equity and inclusion are considered in the services the program provides for students.
Serve as instructor of record for MedP 401E Convocation class.
Applicant must be sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field from an accredited program.
Clinically licensed in the state of IL, or eligible to transfer, or obtain licensure to the state of IL within six (6) months of the date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in programs serving educationally and/or economically disadvantaged students.
Demonstrated experience providing culturally-informed clinical services to diverse and traditionally underserved student groups (e.g. BIPOC/Multicultural, LGBTQIA+, first generation students).
Experience conducting diversity and inclusion programming.
Interest in engaging fully in the typical work of a college counselor, including short-term counseling, group counseling, crisis work, outreach, consultation, and training.
