ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW
Mission Statement: CAMFT exists for the advancement of the Marriage and Family Therapist profession in California by strengthening qualifications, and maintaining high standards of professional ethics and accountability, in order to enhance recognition and utilization of the profession. CAMFT strives to anticipate and meet the professional needs of its members and to create a vibrant Marriage and Family Therapist community.
Our client, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), is seeking a new President. Founded in 1964 as the California State Marriage Counseling Association, CAMFT is an independent, professional, 501(c)(6) association, located in San Diego, California. It has approximately 32,000 members (roughly half of the state’s therapist population) and is the largest association of its kind in the country. The association’s activities revolve around two interrelated themes: (1) the advancement of marriage and family therapy as an art, a science, and a mental health profession, and (2) the advancement of the common business interests of its members. CAMFT has 28 local chapters throughout the state. CAMFT is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the 30-member professional staff administers the programs, services, and activities of the organization within a $6 million operating budget. CAMFT owns its own building and has $13 million in reserves. The programs, services, and benefits offered by CAMFT to its members include an annual conference, representation and advocacy, professional consultation, a bi-monthly magazine, continuing education, journal articles, a professional directory, consumer brochures, scholarships, a job board, mentorships, credentialing assistance, and professional liability insurance. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSITION SUMMARY
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the professional staff; directing the organization’s daily operations, programs, and activities; overseeing the development of the annual operating budget and financial resources; and developing and maintaining alliances with key stakeholders and partners.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES FOR THE FIRST YEAR
It is expected that the Executive Director will achieve the following by the end of the first year:
* Within the first 45 days…
o will have met with the staff, lobbyists, Executive Committee members, key legislative leadership and committee chairs, major stakeholders, and strategic partner organizations to begin the relationships and gain an understanding of the ongoing communication needs
o will have completed an organizational review/audit (issues, structure, staff, membership, processes, resources, initiatives, governance, board/staff relationship and a staff survey), and presented findings to the Executive Committee
o will be getting up to speed on critical policy issues
* Within the first 90 days…
o in conjunction with the Board, will have begun preparation (including a member survey) for an updated strategic planning process and plans to address the issues noted in the organizational review/audit
* Within the first 180 days…
o will have begun the implementation of the updated strategic plan, which will include brand refresh, education, and member recruitment and retention elements
* By the end of the first year…
o will have executed the board’s direction via the strategic plan, to include SMART goals
o will be seen as the statewide preferred mental health provider leader, advancing the mission of CAMFT
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (in priority order)
* Increasingly responsible professional experience of 10-plus years.
* Membership/trade association experience, to include experience working with volunteers
* Experience/understanding of legislative and government advocacy
* Executive and operational management experience with a budget of at least $8 million and staff of 15
* Experience as a spokesperson/public speaker
* Experience with health policy, mental health, and behavioral health issues
* Experience successfully executing a strategic plan and brand refresh
* Track record as a consensus-builder
* Experience utilizing technology to further a mission
* Experience working with a Board (could be as a volunteer)

THE COMMUNITY
CAMFT’s office is located in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood of San Diego, California. San Diego is California’s second largest city and the United States’ eighth largest. San Diego boasts a citywide population of nearly 1.3 million residents and more than 3 million residents countywide. Within its borders, San Diego County encompasses 18 incorporated cities and numerous charming neighborhoods and communities, including downtown’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Coronado, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carlsbad, and Escondido, to name a few. San Diego is renowned for its idyllic climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches, and an array of world-class attractions.
COMPENSATION AND INTERVIEW PROCESS
The competitive compensation package includes a salary of $300,000 to $350,000, plus a bonus based upon business performance. The excellent employee benefits include employer-paid health, disability, and life insurance, a flexible benefits plan, and a 401(k)-retirement plan.
Pre-screened, selected candidates will be invited for an initial interview with the Search Committee in San Diego, CA, on Saturday, March 26, 2022, with second interviews the following morning.
